Herbal Asia is back !

The theme "Herbal Horizon: Innovating Tradition for a Sustainable Future" at Herbal Asia 2024 Business Conference aims to modernize traditional herbal practices, expand market appeal, promote sustainability, drive research advancements, and enhance global competitiveness in the herbal industry.

Greeting from the Founder of Herbal Asia,

COVID-19 changes consumer behavior & the business environment within the health & wellness industry – and which changes can be expected to stay? The current health crisis has been and still is an accelerator. What we see is an extreme change in consumer behavior regarding their preferences, activities, lifestyle and nutrition – driven by shifts in awareness, changing regulations, and technology. We set out to identify key changes in the health & wellness industry focus in relation to herbs and natural products and services in the face of latest trend and what industry players can expect after the pandemic impact. This should serve as a north star for companies to address new consumer behavior, by recognizing the updated key aspects of doing business in health & wellness post-COVID.

Malaysia ranked 12th in the world and ranked 4th in Asia as the most biodiverse country. The market value of the herbal industry in Malaysia is projected to reach RM32 billion in 2020, the number keeps growing, with an annual growth rate between 8%-15%. Thus the growing market of this industry offers an opportunity for wealth creation to the industry players, especially for the farmers and young entrepreneurs.

The shift in healthcare towards natural products' therapeutic value provides vast opportunities for Malaysia and neighboring countries to become a significant global players, given our rich biodiversity in Asia Pacific Region. With Malaysia’s rich tropical rainforest, we are home to some 100 species of ferns, 12,500 species of flowering plants, and 185,000 species of fauna. About 1,200 of these plant species have potential pharmaceutical value and usage.

With these potentials, industry players, must strive to gain a foothold in the global herbal market, making sure the products must possess the highest standard of manufacturing and be able to compete in terms of quality, safety, efficacy, pricing, and branding of products, as well as an efficient distribution network and meeting international health certification standards.

Consumers Increasingly Using Natural Remedies for Common Illnesses

A market research report by Kalorama Information, "The US Market for Vitamins, Supplements, and Minerals," reveals that 30 million consumers prefer herbal remedies over over-the-counter (OTC) treatments, and 19 million combine both herbs and OTC remedies to address their health issues.

Industry Group Develops Botanical Testing Methods

To enhance the herb industry's reputation for consistency, the Methods Validation Program (MVP) has established testing procedures for ginkgo, echinacea, and ginseng. The goal is to approve testing methods for 15 herbs by the year 2000. Currently, the US Pharmacopoeia and the American Organization of Associated Chemists (AOAC) are reviewing these methods for publication in their official compendiums. Funded by 30 industry members, including raw material suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, and trade organizations, the MVP uses high-tech methods like HPLC that are both practical and applicable. This initiative is a step towards self-regulation, covering everything from harvest procedures to finished raw materials.
